A Peek Behind the Hedge, Jessica Chaney

Owner & Founder, Lycette Designs
The founder of Lycette Designs, a needlepoint brand, Jessica Chaney has a thing for the "details". A Palm Beach County native, she's always been drawn to the charm of old Florida, and if you've ever stepped foot in her Palm Beach shop on South County, well, you'll know what we mean.
Brimming with colorful canvases, vintage bamboo accessories, and seashells collected from local beaches, Lycette is a treasure trove not only for seasoned needlepointers, but for folks who just want a dose of prep + whimsy straight from the color queen herself.
What began as a beloved childhood pastime for Jessica has now grown into a thriving e-commerce business, 2 storefronts (their second location is in Newport, Rhode Island), and a loyal community of needlepointers along the Eastern Seaboard (and TikTok) who love an artfully embroidered monkey or cheeky phrase as much as Jessica does. Fresh, fun, and friendly, get to know our friend Jessica!
You’re a Palm Beach County native and have seen it all. What were some childhood highlights of growing up in South Florida? What do you miss the most about the “old days”?
Jessica: Beach days are my favorite childhood memories. The smell of sunscreen and oranges is deeply nostalgic and comforting. I long for how quirky Florida was when I was growing up. There was kitsch and self importance was rare. We would visit Blood’s orange grove & Gumbo Limbo, my parents hosted costume parties, we ate at Hamburger Heaven, celebrated birthdays at The Mai Kai, sung along to Jimmy Buffett, and donned colorful & wacky prints. While there were preppy undertones, the culture was rooted in bohemian barefoot and sunkissed sensibilities.

Your Palm Beach store on S. County is nothing short of a treasure trove. Where does your eye for color originate? Can you share a special detail or story about a certain piece in the space?
Jessica: Thank you! I adore details and strive for customers to find charm in every nook & cranny. Growing up in South Florida vibrancy & kooky color palettes were all around. Corals, purples, oranges, and aqua blues were in living rooms and on handpainted ceramic fish that hung outside. I can’t pinpoint a favorite piece at Lycette Palm Beach, because there are treasures collected from all over. Hand woven Mario Torres Lopez pieces, seashells from a shell show, orchids from our local nursery, and needlepoint that I stitched finished with colorful fabrics.

You have a rapidly growing social presence on Instagram and TikTok. Where do you derive the majority of your inspiration? Have you ever experienced a “drought” or content dry spell where you? If so, how do you recalibrate?
Jessica: I share what I find inspiring. Sometimes others love it, and sometimes what I love doesn’t resonate on social media. That is okay, I would rather be rooted in authenticity than trying to follow trends. Of course I experience dry spells! Social media can be very toxic and draining. It can also be uplifting. If I am feeling depleted I turn it off. Sometimes I just need the noise to disappear for a great idea to materialize.

Your customers know (and love) your husband and business partner, Greg, AKA Mr. Needlepoint. What is it like running a business with your significant other?
Jessica: We complement each other well. Greg is completely logical and business driven. He answers emails promptly and numbers don’t stress him out. Meanwhile I despise administrative tasks and would rather focus on new products and designs. A successful relationship, in business or at home, is rooted in communication and recognizing and respecting each other's strengths and weaknesses.

Our team is lucky to know you more intimately and we can all agree, your attention to detail is unmatched. That includes making people, and even the smallest moments, feel important. Are there gestures you particularly appreciate or are touched by as a recipient?
Jessica: Thank you notes are essential, as well as remembering people’s names. Ask questions and be curious. Make others feel welcome & accepted, always find the humor in a situation, and a home cooked meal is king.
Girlfriends are in town visiting from up North. Where are you taking them?
Jessica: Juice at Don Victorio’s, a walk on the bike trail, Coniglio and The Classic Bookshop, my favorite seashell shop, tacos at PapiChulo, Blowing Rock in Hobe Sound, Loggerhead Marine Life Center, stone crabs for dinner from Outclaws on Northlake, and end the day relaxing on the porch. Margaritas, homemade salsa & Old Florida chips, laughter & conversation, a fun playlist, and, of course, key lime pie for dessert. Oh, and always keep aloe in the fridge for when friends visit from up North.
